State's Only Breeding Goshawk, Chicks Found Dead

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources said the state's only known breeding female northern goshawk, a bird of prey, was shot and killed in Grantsville last week.A DNR biologist said the remains of a female northern goshawk were found last Friday in the Savage River State Forest near Westernport and McAndrews Hill roads, and evidence indicated that the animal was shot and killed, leaving three orphaned chicks in the nest to die.

Good grief. I'm no falconer, but raptors have always been special to me. What a crime.

Yeah - I just don't understand it. What would be the point?

Just the challenge of the target?

I shot a chickadee for that reason when I was a kid. Once was more than enough to cure me.

Your blog is nice. We have worked in the study of migration patterns of hawks in Nicaragua, and we have had the opportunity to rescue and rehabilitate a few hawks over the years. Here is our blog item about one of them: http://lagunadeapoyo.blogspot.com/2011/04/animal-rescue-iii-short-tailed-hawk.html
Thanks for taking a look!

Doug- goshawks can be observed in flight in Towson , Maryland in Late sunmmer and fall. Towson is a suburb of Baltimore. I refuse to believe that goshawks are not a common species in Western Maryland. Nelson Briefer- goshawk specialist- www.goshawkspugetsound.blogspot.com www.goshawkstucson2010-11.blogspot.com.

As a falconer, seeing this article right before going to bed changed my mood from hopefull, as another article showcased a wild Gyr sighting in So. Cal., to despair. I cannot understand in our day and age such ignorance still exists. I am not even mad, just sad. I feel I need to say sorry to someone.
